Experienced Staff Attorney

The Orleans Public Defenders Office (OPD) is seeking applicants for an Experienced Staff Attorney. 

Job Summary:  

The primary role of the Staff Attorney is to zealously represent their clients in criminal proceedings, including arraignment, pretrial hearings, plea negotiations, trial and sentencing. The Staff Attorney participates in regular trainings and case rounds to continually improve her level of practice and representation. Also, the Staff Attorney assists and supports colleagues with court coverage and other tasks as needs arise. The Staff Attorney works closely in a team with an investigator, client advocate, social worker, and administrative staff to render effective legal assistance to each client. The Staff Attorney is responsible for developing and maintaining an effective attorney-client relationship, and is closely supervised by a Trial Division Supervisor. 

Qualifications: 

Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the State of Louisiana and be in good standing. Applicants must possess at least three years of criminal defense experience in trial work or other related work, and demonstrated commitment to criminal and indigent defense. Applicants must be interested in working with individuals charged with criminal offenses from diverse cultural, racial and ethnic backgrounds and must possess the ability to communicate effectively with clients, witnesses, colleagues, staff and court personnel orally and in writing. The position requires excellent legal research and writing skills and knowledge of and commitment to the national standards of criminal defense.

The ideal applicant will be able to demonstrate aptitude for developing case theory, investigation and litigation strategies; conducting pre-trial, trial and post-trial negotiations; and maintaining effective attorney-client relationship in a fast-paced, heavy case/workload environment. Ideal applicants will have the ability to immediately handle complex and serious cases. The ideal applicant will have experience working in an established public defender office that provides services consistent with OPD’s mission of client-centered, zealous representation.
