Supervising Attorney

The Orleans Public Defenders Office (OPD) is seeking a Supervising Attorney.

MISSION
The mission of the Orleans Public Defenders Office is to provide each eligible client with client-centered legal representation of the highest quality – zealous, conscientious, caring, professional, ethical and skilled – whether in criminal, juvenile or municipal/traffic court.

Job Summary
The Supervising Attorney will be a team player willing to assist in administrative and managerial responsibilities while carrying a reduced caseload and supervising a team of attorneys.
Additionally, the Supervising Attorney will conduct regular courtroom observations of attorneys, in hearings and in trials; observe interactions between attorneys and clients; provide feedback and written evaluations; second-chair as necessary and assist attorneys in all phases of trial preparation; stand in for section coverage or First Appearance emergencies; coordinate with, and meet regularly with team investigators; participate in the retention of attorneys; and be on call to address issues that may arise in court. Supervising Attorneys serve a one-year term with the opportunity to reapply when that term expires.

Staff Interpreter and Client Advocate

Mission
The mission of the Orleans Public Defenders Office is to provide each eligible client with client-centered legal representation of the highest quality – zealous, conscientious, caring, professional, ethical and skilled – whether in criminal, juvenile or municipal/traffic court.

Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Client Service Division Supervisor, the Client Advocate will support holistic, client-centered advocacy from arrest to reentry for OPD's Client Services Division (CSD). The Staff Interpreter and Client Advocate will provide interpretation and translation services for all cases at the Orleans Public Defenders. This will include Spanish interpretation services for attorneys, investigators, and all OPD staff and non-Spanish language access coordination. The Staff Interpreter and Client Advocate will build and maintain a network of volunteers as interpreters capable and willing to assist the work of OPD. The Staff Interpreter and Client Advocate will provide administrative and advocacy support at designated First Appearance sessions. In addition to First Appearance Support and Intake, the Staff Interpreter and Client Advocate will work under the direct supervision of Staff Attorneys to provide a wide range of advocacy support services, including but not limited to bond exhaustion efforts, alternatives to incarceration, medical advocacy, in-custody safety support, record compilation, referral services, and re-entry support.

The Staff Interpreter and Client Advocate will actively develop new advocacy support services in response to attorney requests and client need. The Staff Interpreter and Client Advocate will also be responsible for assisting with walk-in clients and families to answer questions or direct them to the appropriate agency in addition to their established caseload. The work of the Staff Interpreter and Client Advocate involves frequent contact with clients and their communities, including regular jail visits. Lastly, the Staff Interpreter and Client Advocate will assist with long-term strategic planning of CSD and grant-seeking.

Entry Level Staff Attorney - Fall 2015

The Orleans Public Defenders Office (OPD) is seeking entry- level Staff Attorneys for fall 2015.

Job Summary
The primary role of the Staff Attorney is to zealously represent the client in criminal proceedings. In addition, the Staff Attorney (to the extent possible) is expected to maintain a continuing duty to the client. The Staff Attorney counsels and renders or assists in securing appropriate legal services for the client in matters arising from the original criminal proceedings and maintains contact to ensure the protection of the client’s rights so long as the client remains under court jurisdiction.
